For the first time since 2015, the Carolina Panthers host the Detroit Lions on Sunday Night Football, a prime opportunity for the 1-2 franchise to build momentum heading into the bye week.
Head coach Dave Canales and his team will have to navigate some significant injuries in recent weeks in a rainy climate at Bank of America Stadium. This means the Panthers may have to change their approach against a 2-1 Lions team that is known for explosive plays and aggression on late downs.
A different approach also means some spicy guesses for Sunday night. Here are three bold predictions for Carolina’s primetime opening.
Bold predictions for the Carolina Panthers in Week 4 against the Detroit Lions
Brad Idzik finds balance, Panthers rush for 150 total yards
One of Carolina's biggest struggles this season is establishing the run. They have averaged only 97 yards per game this season, 21st in the NFL. However, flashes emerged last week in the second half of their loss to the now 3-1 Cleveland Browns.
The Lions have a bottom-10 run defense, allowing 117.3 rushing yards per game and the fourth-most 10-plus-yard runs, according to Next Gen Stats. This is a tremendous chance for the Panthers to produce in the run game and help offensive coordinator Brad Idzik find balance.
Despite losing standout left guard Damien Lewis, the Panthers and running backs Chuba Hubbard and AJ Dillon take advantage of the wet conditions and have productive games on the ground, tallying at least 150 yards in an impressive display before a national audience.
Battered cornerback room rises to the occasion
The Panthers have one of the best cornerback duos in football on injured reserve, as Jaycee Horn (torn quadriceps) and Mike Jackson (groin surgery) are out for at least eight weeks. This puts rookie cornerback Will Lee III, Chau Smith-Wade, and Akayleb Evans up against Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams.
This doesn't include the possibility of last year’s undrafted standout Corey Thornton being elevated from the practice squad.
It is a daunting task, but instead of a shootout, the Panthers' weakened secondary rises to the occasion and limits quarterback Jared Goff and the Lions' passing game to at least 200 passing yards in wet conditions.
Lee has his best game of the season, coming away with his first interception after dropping one against the Browns.
Panthers overcome the odds to secure big prime-time win
Many expect a back-and-forth, high-scoring game in Charlotte. Both offenses are wildly productive, especially the Panthers, where quarterback Bryce Young leads the NFL in passing yards through three games while showing effective command and composure under center.
The injury bug can be demoralizing for football fans, but the Panthers have — knock on wood — a healthy defensive front and Young ready for Sunday night against a Lions team that has become one of the better-run organizations in recent years.
Those two key aspects for Carolina helped the Panthers pull off a huge prime-time win against Goff and the Lions.
Young throws for his lowest passing-yard total of the season, but he plays efficiently, overcoming consistent pressure from the Lions' defensive line, while the defense limits Detroit's explosive plays.
