The Carolina Panthers built positive momentum before their bye week after a Sunday Night Football win over the Detroit Lions. Head coach Dave Canales' squad is still sitting at .500 through four games, but they are very much in the fight.
They are also getting some exceptional contributions.
It's not perfect yet, but given the key injuries the Panthers are dealing with, nobody expected it to be. Problems remain, but a select few have exceeded expectations as they gear up for a much-needed period to rest and heal.
With that in mind, here are four Panthers who have blown initial projections at the bye week.
Carolina Panthers players who have exceeded expectations at the 2026 bye week
Bobby Okereke - LB
When veteran linebacker Bobby Okereke signed just before final cuts, fans wondered what sort of role he could play right away. He'd missed the entire summer, so a bedding-in period was more than understandable. Instead, he has hit the ground running in no uncertain terms.
Okereke has been a revelation alongside second-term All-Pro linebacker Devin Lloyd at the defensive second level. His experience, communication, and ability to be around the action have been a breath of fresh air. He's managed 26 tackles, one sack, one interception, and four pressures so far, but his 65.5 passer rating when targeted is even more impressive.
If Okereke keeps this up, the Panthers would be wise to keep him around beyond 2026.
Darren Waller - TE
Nobody knew what Darren Waller had left. He flashed for the Miami Dolphins last season, but injuries caught up with him again. Missing the entire offseason had many wondering if the league had officially given up on him, but the tight end has been a tremendous addition to the Panthers through four weeks.
Waller's ability to make tough catches across the middle and in the red zone is already a key part of the team's strategy. Bryce Young trusts him, and defenses must account for his physical presence on every snap. Even when he doesn't get targeted, he's still feared enough to free up space for others to do damage.
Keeping Waller healthy is key. If the Panthers can do that, his influence will only grow.
Will Lee III - CB
The Panthers have put more on Will Lee III's shoulders than they'd like. Long-term injuries to Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson Sr. — arguably the NFL's best cornerback tandem — thrust the fourth-round selection into the spotlight. And aside from a disastrous debut, it's been relatively encouraging.
Lee looks sticky in coverage. He's been forced to grow up quickly, but the resolve he's shown is a strong foundation to build on. There will be mistakes moving forward, but the Panthers are willing to ride the wave with the Texas A&M product.
He'll be a better player for them. But the fact that Lee is already holding his own as Carolina's CB1 speaks volumes.
Bryce Young - QB
Expectations were relatively high for quarterback Bryce Young heading into the season. Through four games, he has absolutely smashed them.
Young leads the league in passing yards with 1,268. He already has nine passing touchdowns, and his 74.6 QBR is a career high by a considerable margin. More importantly, he looks in complete command of the offense, which has taken on a new aggressive theme under Brad Idzik.
The Panthers wanted to see more from Young before giving him a lucrative contract extension. Based on his early returns, general manager Dan Morgan needs to get this done sooner rather than later.
