The Carolina Panthers return from their bye week to face the Philadelphia Eagles. Lincoln Financial Field will be an intimidating environment, but head coach Dave Canales' squad can win.
Philadelphia is dealing wiith some injury issues. Jalen Hurts will miss the game after being diagnosed with a blood clot, and several other key players are also in danger of missing out. Prolific right tackle Lane Johnson has retired, and interior lineman Cam Jurgens was traded to the Baltimore Ravens.
The Eagles have also lost three straight, so this represents a significant opportunity for the Panthers. It will not be easy, but the fact that sportsbooks now list them as 3.5-point favorites tells its own story.
For the Panthers to succeed, these players must overcome potential mismatches.
Carolina Panthers players caught in concerning mismatches against the Philadelphia Eagles
Luke Fortner, C
Things are sitting precariously for Luke Fortner. The veteran center has not maximized his chance as the starting option through four games, and if the same trend continues, the Panthers could throw someone else into the role.
The Panthers have options. Rookie fifth-rounder Sam Hecht could be the preferred choice. Brady Christensen (when healthy) is another, and Corey Bullock could also fill the role once left guard Damien Lewis returns.
Fortner won't have things easy this weekend. He'll face the prolific defensive tackle tandem of Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter, and he must hold his own to stand any chance of keeping his job.
Chau Smith-Wade, CB
The Panthers will benefit from Jalen Hurts' absence. Tannner McKee will likely start under center, so he'll rely heavily on short-to-intermediate throws to move the chains in difficult situations.
Tight end Dallas Goedert's role will be crucial. He'll probably be lined up in the slot more often than not, especially with Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith potentially missing the game. That puts him squarely in the crosshairs of cornerback Chau Smith-Wade, who must cope with the added physicality to gain the upper hand.
John Metchie III, WR
The Panthers might get breakout star Jalen Coker back, which is a massive positive. However, they will need wide receiver John Metchie III to continue his encouraging recent influence as a trusted target for quarterback Bryce Young.
Metchie will have his work cut out in the slot against Eagles cornerback Cooper DeJean. He's a physical presence who can quickly get wideouts off their routes. But the Alabama product's recent form offers reasons to be optimistic.
Chuba Hubbard, RB
The Panthers will rely heavily on veteran running back Chuba Hubbard to lead their charge once again in Week 5. A.J. Dillon is struggling with injury, Jonathon Brooks is on injured reserve, and Trevor Etienne will be returning for his first game if he's officially activated to the game-day roster.
This means Hubbard needs to come through. He's coming off his best game in two seasons against the Detroit Lions, but doing the same against the Eagles' vaunted front seven will be a much trickier proposition.
