The Carolina Panthers offense has taken the league by storm this season. Offensive coordinator Brad Idzik, quarterback Bryce Young, and wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan are gaining huge plaudits, and rightfully so, but there is an underrated contribution being overlooked.

It's easy for everyone to forget about John Metchie III.

Metchie isn't the flashiest player, and he went into the proverbial wilderness despite so many high hopes as a second-round pick. That wasn't his fault, of course, but he is slowly starting to get his career back on track.

John Metchie III's influence is growing within Carolina Panthers' offense

The Panthers have only given Metchie 10 targets in the three games he's been active, but all five of his receptions have gone for first downs. He's got a touchdown to his name and is visibly growing in confidence the more he gets involved.

His previous connection to Young from their time together at Alabama also makes him a trusted asset in key moments.

Obviously, McMillan and Jalen Coker (when healthy) are the top two wideouts. But with Xavier Legette on injured reserve with a knee injury, Metchie is the slot WR3 until further notice.

And he's making the most of it.

Metchie's career has not gone according to plan so far. Expectations were high when the Houston Texans selected the explosive pass-catcher at No. 44 overall in the 2022 NFL Draft, but being diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia changed everything.

After missing his entire rookie campaign for treatment, Metchie made his triumphant return. He spent the next two years in Houston and flashed promise without firmly cementing himself in the team's plans. He was then traded to the Philadelphia Eagles, but he didn't catch on.

Bryce Young believes in John Metchie III, and it's showing

The New York Jets were the next team to strike a trade for Metchie, and he looked pretty sharp amid their offensive struggles. That wasn't enough to secure a new deal, but the Panthers saw something in Metchie they could salvage.

Reuniting the gifted wideout with Young has provided the spark needed.

Metchie might never become the difference-maker most envisaged when he came into the league, but the Panthers don't need him to be. He knows how to get open, has strong timing with Young, and can also make things happen after the catch when his number is called.

With McMillan and Coker there, the Panthers need nothing more from Metchie right now.

And he is delivering.

Metchie needs some stability. It's been an arduous journey for the receiver so far, but it's also worth remembering he only recently turned 26.

He's got everything in front of him with very little tread on the tires. So if Metchie keeps performing well, getting another contract is more than feasible.

Young believes in him. All he needs is to believe in himself, and even if he isn't putting up All-Pro-caliber numbers, he is making his opportunities count.

In Metchie's situation, the small things will make a huge difference.
