The Carolina Panthers are dealing with significant injury problems right now. Some are more concerning than others, but the Panthers will sorely miss wide receiver Jalen Coker if he can't play in Week 4 against the Detroit Lions on Sunday Night Football.

Coker left last weekend's defeat to the Cleveland Browns with a quad issue. He was questionable for the contest with an ankle issue, so it's clear the Holy Cross product is pretty banged up right now.

With wide receiver Xavier Legette going to injured reserve with a knee problem, Carolina cannot afford to be without Coker for too long. But if he has to miss this one on prime time to ensure he is fully healed after the bye week, so be it.

Latest update on Jalen Coker's status for Panthers vs. Lions in Week 4

According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, Coker is unlikely to play against the Lions. This was always expected, especially after the Panthers elevated Ja'seem Reed from the practice squad, but it is immensely disappointing for a player who wasted no time in catching fire early in the campaign.

What Jalen Coker and Dave Canales said

Dave Canales: "We'd like to, we'd like to push it as far as possible, and that was kind of the point of getting the condensed work to move him around. We don't want to overload him on any single day, but wanted to see if we could push him just a little bit more. So we'll move him around again tomorrow and then see what it's like on game day."

Jalen Coker: "I'm feeling good, just trying to battle through some stuff. I've missed enough games, I think, but I'm just trying to get out there and play. I want to help our team win, so that's what I'm going to try to do."

Previous updates

Coker leaving early against the Browns hurt the offense. It wasn't the ankle, but rather a quad problem that was causing the wideout distress. But after the Panthers took a cautious approach in practice throughout the week, he was officially listed as questionable.

What this means for the Carolina Panthers

Losing someone like Coker, who is clearly ascending, is a body blow. The Panthers will be much more reliant on Tetairoa McMillan, who needs a big game versus a vulnerable Detroit secondary. But with Legette also missing, it doesn't make things any easier for quarterback Bryce Young.

If the reports are accurate and the Panthers err on the side of caution, Coker should be ready to go once Carolina returns from its extended rest. There is still a long way to go and a lot of football left, but if head coach Dave Canales' squad cannot pick up the slack without him, there's real danger of this team being 1-3 at the bye.

Hopefully, it doesn't come to that, but it cannot be completely dismissed.

Coker is one of the league's brightest young receivers. The Panthers have already paid him, which was the right call. But the sooner he gets back, the better.
