Jalen Coker signed a three-year extension with the Carolina Panthers that keeps him under contract through 2029. And it took one week for the wide receiver to vindicate general manager Dan Morgan's decision to get ahead of the curve.
Coker's got a three-year, $35 million contract with a $7 million signing bonus and $19.5 million guaranteed. This came after the 2024 undrafted free agent out of Holy Cross surged into the WR2 spot opposite Tetairoa McMillan and a trusted target of quarterback Bryce Young.
After Coker caught eight of nine targets for 138 receiving yards (career high) and two touchdowns in Carolina's loss to the Chicago Bears, it already looks like a tremendous piece of business.

The Panthers obviously would have preferred to leave Week 1 with a win. Still, Coker gave them another reason to believe they made the right call by extending him before the season.
More importantly, Coker's performance showed his playoff heroics against the Los Angeles Rams weren't just a random hot streak. He was heavily involved from the start against Chicago and repeatedly made plays downfield.
Young noticed it too.
"Did the same thing he's been doing, be consistent, do a great job, creating separation after the catch," Young said after the game. He also pointed out that Coker contributed in the running game and did plenty that did not show up in the box score.
If Coker continues producing at anything close to this level, the $35 million extension could eventually look pretty modest compared with what the Panthers might have had to pay if they waited another year.
There is obviously a long way to go. One game doesn't turn an extension into a steal, and Coker won't catch eight passes for 138 yards every week.

Coker was in a walking boot after rolling his left ankle against Chicago, although the wideout said he expects this to be precautionary and does not expect to miss this weekend's crucial divisional road clash against the Atlanta Falcons.

Carolina now has McMillan, Coker and Xavier Legette competing for targets in an offense that produced 478 total yards in the opener. And after another subpar outing from Legette, the other two are now streets ahead.
Coker's emergence gives Young another receiver who can win vertically and make difficult catches outside the numbers. For the Panthers, getting ahead of this market with his extension would be particularly satisfying.
The athletic pass-catcher was already showing signs that he could become a valuable player when Carolina gave him the extension. Now, Coker is coming off the best regular-season game of his career.
The Panthers did not need to wait for Coker to prove everything before paying him. They bet on what they thought he was becoming.
After one week, that bet looks pretty smart.
