Jalen Coker enters the Carolina Panthers game against the Chicago Bears as the No. 2 wide receiver behind Tetairoa McMillan, but the matchup could give him an opportunity to make an even bigger impact.
Chicago is entering the season with a depleted secondary, especially in the slot. Kyler Gordon is still recovering from a calf injury and is not expected to play in the opener, while safety Coby Bryant is also sidelined after suffering a knee injury that is expected to keep him out for several weeks.
That leaves the Bears with Cam Lewis and rookie Malik Muhammad II listed at the top of their depth chart at the nickel spot. Jaylon Johnson and Tyrique Stevenson are the team's starting outside corners, and they have questions to answer as well.

That could create a particularly favorable situation for Coker.
McMillan will naturally command plenty of attention from Chicago after his 1,000-yard rookie season, and Johnson is expected to get his share of that matchup.
Johnson is arguably Chicago's biggest strength at cornerback. He's healthy after missing significant time last season, and the Bears will need him to deal with one of the league's most promising young receivers.
The Panthers recently gave Coker a three-year extension through 2029, and his late-season production showed why.
After missing the first six games of 2025 with a quad injury, Coker finished the regular season with 33 catches for 394 receiving yards and three touchdowns. More importantly, he ended the campaign strongly, catching 19 passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns over the Panthers' final five regular-season games.
Then, he exploded in the playoffs as he caught nine passes for 134 yards and a touchdown against the Los Angeles Rams in the Panthers' wild card loss.
Bears' depleted slot options won't go unnoticed by the Carolina Panthers
The Bears' current depth chart lists Lewis as the first-string nickel and Muhammad as his backup. Gordon's absence matters because he has been Chicago's primary slot option when healthy.
Coker has primarily operated in the slot, and that is where Carolina could look to attack.
FantasyPros noted that Coker had a 21 percent target-per-route run rate and 2.81 yards per route run against single high coverage during the relevant late-season sample in 2025. Chicago also allowed the fourth most yards per target and fifth most fantasy points per opportunity to slot receivers from Weeks 12-18 last season.
Sure, that doesn't guarantee a huge statistical performance this weekend at Bank of America Stadium. Matchups rarely work that cleanly. But the opportunity is obvious.
Chicago has one established outside corner in Johnson, uncertainty in the slot, and multiple important defensive backs dealing with injuries. Carolina, meanwhile, has a receiver in Coker who finished last season playing his best football and enters 2026 with a bigger role.
That makes Coker one of the more interesting players to watch when the Panthers and Bears meet. And if he performs well, Carolina could triumph.
