The competition for roster spots in the Carolina Panthers' wide receiver room is gathering pace. And it's starting to look like one hopeful is separating himself from the rest.
During the team's telecast of their preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, general manager Dan Morgan expressed excitement about Ja'seem Reed's future. The front office leader praised his ability to bring in tough receptions all over the field, and it sounded like there was a route for him to make an impression when the real action arrives.
That's not set in stone, but the chances are improving with every practice and every game that passes.

There has been a lot to like about Reed's progress throughout the summer. He's been a big play waiting to happen over training camp, making impressive catches consistently to give himself a fighting chance. The gifted route runner has also taken this through into the preseason with two touchdowns in as many games.
Reed has quickly gone from undesirable to almost undeniable. And there is now a growing belief among reporters that the second-year wideout will find his name on the 53-man roster when the final decisions are made.
Considering how bleak Reed's roster aspirations looked earlier this offseason, this development is a big surprise.
The Panthers challenged everyone to increase their efforts after bolstering competition for places over the offseason. Some have wilted under the pressure, but the former University of San Diego playmaker is thriving.
The fact that Reed is being used sparingly is telling, too.
If Reed was on the roster bubble fighting for his future, he may get more reps and targets. That hasn't been the case so far, suggesting the Panthers may be keeping his talent hidden from the league.
Reed is riding on the crest of a wave. And with third-round rookie Chris Brazzell II out for the season with a torn LCL, there is a window of opportunity to force his way into the team's plans.
Tetairoa McMillan, Jalen Coker, Xavier Legette, and maybe even David Moore are locks. All bets are off aside from that, but there is no doubt Reed has stood out more than arguably any other pass-catcher looking to defy the odds.
Obviously, Reed has no experience in the offensive rotation in a regular-season environment. He spent most of last season on the practice squad, so it represents a journey into the unknown of sorts. The preseason flashes are nice, but doing the same when the intensity rises considerably is something else.
If the Panthers don't try, they'll never know. And if Morgan's gushing praise was any indication, Reed will get his shot.
