There are new concerns around the health of wide receiver Xavier Legette.

The wideout is currently dealing with a foot problem, and the severity is unknown. However, the 2024 first-round pick was spotted in a walking boot on the sidelines during the Carolina Panthers' preseason win over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Not a great sign, but the panic among fans underscores just how precarious Legette's situation is as preparations for the new campaign enter their final stretch.

Xavier Legette's foot injury could damage his summer momentum with the Carolina Panthers

Legette came in for heavy criticism after once again failing to meet expectations in Year 2 of his professional career. The Panthers remained confident, though the extension given to Jalen Coker indicates he is now clearly ahead of him in the pecking order. This raised urgency brought a positive response, with the No. 32 pick flashing real promise over the summer.

Now, there are doubts again.

Hopefully, this walking boot was just a precaution. The Panthers have time on their side, and the goal will be to have Legette ready for Week 1 against the Chicago Bears. If that means he has to miss time now, so be it, but trying to rush him back at this stage makes no sense whatsoever.

The problem is other wide receivers are thriving in Legette's absence.

Jimmy Horn Jr. continues to catch the eye. John Metchie III made some crucial catches against the Jaguars, and his prior connection with quarterback Bryce Young from their time together at Alabama cannot be dismissed. Tetairoa McMillan and Coker are cemented as the 1-2 punch, so becoming a complementary piece is probably the best Legette can hope for.

With rookie third-round pick Chris Brazzell II already out for the season with a torn LCL, the Panthers won't be contemplating removing Legette from the equation just yet. He's still got the physical tools to be impactful, but in what sort of role remains to be seen.

Even so, Legette cannot afford to have an injury issue hampering him over the early stages of the campaign.

There is way too much at stake for that.

Obviously, it's a wait-and-see scenario. The walking boot isn't typically good news, but it could have been to alleviate any discomfort while Legette was watching his teammates on the field. Still, given this is a crossroads campaign for the pass-catcher, the sooner he gets back into the mix, the better.

Some fans have already given up on Legette. Others still have faith. The actual truth probably lies somewhere in the middle, so even the slightest injury worry could have big ramifications.

And nobody will know that more than Legette.
