Panthers Get Two Draft Picks

AUTHOR: | IN: Panthers | COMMENTS: None Yet

The NFL has awarded the Carolina Panthers two seventh-round draft picks due to last year’s loss of both Chris Draft and Vinny Ciurciu according to the Charlotte Observer. The Panthers received the 34th and 43rd picks in the last round, the 241st and 250th overall selections. Draft signed with St. Louis after the 2006 season. Ciurciu signed with Minnesota. The Panthers now have 10 overall picks in the seven-round draft, including two in the third round and three in the seventh. The NFL awarded 32 compensatory picks to 15 teams. Under the collective bargaining agreement, a team losing more or [...]

The NFL’s Image Problem

AUTHOR: | IN: Free Agency | COMMENTS: 2 Comments

The last few months must have been especially difficult for the NFL’s new commissioner, Roger Goodell.  The league has found itself in a tough position – dealing more with controversy and off-field problems than dealing with the game. Imagine taking over as the CEO of a major corporation and being faced on day one with something as big as the Michael Vick story.  That’s hardly how you want to begin your new tenure. Goodell had to be wishing for the start of the season just so the games being played on the field could take some of the attention away from the [...]

Panthers Add Another Guard

AUTHOR: | IN: Free Agency, Panthers | COMMENTS: 3 Comments

The Charlotte Observer is reporting that the Carolina Panthers have added Milford Brown to the offensive line mix. They added another Friday, signing unrestricted free agent Milford Brown, who is 6-foot-5 and 330 pounds. Contract terms were undisclosed. Brown’s signing comes on the heels of the team’s agreement with another giant guard, Toniu Fonoti, on Tuesday, adding to the impression that Carolina wants to get bigger along the line and exploit the power running game. Brown, 28, has played with Houston, Arizona and St. Louis over six seasons. He had 16 starts over four seasons with the Texans, then started [...]

Do We Need A Quarterback?

AUTHOR: | IN: Panthers | COMMENTS: 5 Comments

Mock drafts are just that – mocked up.  But looking through the large number of them on the web causes headaches and brings up a lot of questions. I’ve seen projections for the Carolina Panthers’ thirteenth overall pick ranging from the obvious to the ridiculous.  And one position has come up far too often – quarterback. So, why do these draft prognosticators seem to think that the Panthers need a quarterback?  Isn’t Jake Delhomme’s rehab going well according to all reports?  Isn’t Matt Moore a solid backup that could be counted on? We’ll start with Delhomme. Some talk surrounding the [...]

Studs ‘N’ Duds

AUTHOR: | IN: Panthers | COMMENTS: None Yet

Spring Fever is officially here.  The grass needs its first mowing.  The house needs its first good top-to-bottom cleaning.  And, of course, the car could sure use a good washing and a fresh coat of wax. But before you run out to take care of all those items on your Honey-do list, stay inside with the rest of us and kill a few more minutes as we dive into the world of Studs ‘N’ Duds. Studs.                                                                                                                                                    Ain’t Capitalism Great? Two sisters with little to do, and, apparently, a lot of time on their hands have placed a corn flake shaped [...]

Pacman the Poet

AUTHOR: | IN: Free Agency | COMMENTS: None Yet

I suppose I’ve been a little bit hard on Pacman Jones in recent days here.  I’ve let myself get all caught up in the problems he’s had in the past.  I was just really hard on him for the six (or is it two?) arrests in his past. But the Pacman appeared on Michael Irvin’s radio show Tuesday and discussed his issues and the potential for winding up in Dallas. “The best business decision is for me to start somewhere new,” Jones said. “I’m not sitting here telling you I don’t own up to mistakes I’ve made.  I accept everything, [...]

Panthers Add Fonoti

AUTHOR: | IN: Free Agency, Panthers | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Carolina Panthers added guard Toniu Fonoti on Tuesday according to the Charlotte Observer. The Carolina Panthers have signed free agent guard Toniu Fonoti, a former second-round draft choice who has been in and out of the league in recent seasons because of weight problems. The Panthers hope Fonoti (6-foot-4, 350 pounds), can compete for playing time at guard. San Diego picked him in the second round of the 2002 draft. He started 14 games for the Chargers as a rookie, then spent the next season on injured reserve. In 2004, he started 16 games as San Diego went 12-4. [...]
