The defensive backs are more than just cover guys

When you think of a defensive back, oftentimes the stereotypical defensive back comes to mind. He may tend to talk a lot, and make plays occasionally. That is not the case with the Carolina Panthers corners. Do they talk? Yes, they do, particularly Donte Jackson. However, as they showed on Sunday, they can back it up.

James Bradberry led all Carolina Panthers defensive backs with eight tackles and two pass deflections. Mike Adams did his part with six at the safety position, also recording two pass deflections. Rookie cornerback Jackson did his part too. He tallied six as well, continuing to have a tremendous season. They were not afraid to come down and make plays in addition to their usual coverage duties. Their versatility was on full display in this contest, and that was great to see. To me, their performances spoke to the defensive identity the team is trying to create.

If the corners can keep this level of play up, the defense will be unstoppable. If every player is active and rushing to the football, I would consider that a success. As a defensive coordinator, you can’t ask for much more than that.
