After drops in his first year and inconsistency in his second hampered the start of his career, Xavier Legette's terrific training camp has led to high hopes for the third-year wide receiver from South Carolina.
With the current state of the Bears' secondary, there is a chance that No. 1 pass-catcher Tetairoa McMillan or Jalen Coker will have a feast in the passing game. However, none of the attention will be on Legette, which could create big-play opportunities.
Legette gets the year started with a chunk play before making critical third-down catches throughout the game. This will inch the 2024 first-round pick toward the century mark as the Panthers' leading receiver on the day.
Panthers offense has most efficient game in Canales era
I have said it all offseason: head coach Dave Canales' biggest issue as play-caller was play sequencing.
It led to much of the inconsistency on this side of the ball. Now, offensive coordinator Brad Idzik is calling the shots, and the offense could change for the better under his command.
That is exactly what could happen against the Bears. Idzik's aggressive play-calling and steady, play-to-play sequences let the Panthers offense run with incredible efficiency and quickly put Chicago's defense on its heels.
In the end, the Panthers' expected points added (EPA) per play finishes highest in a single game in the Canales era, leading to a successful day on offense.
Linebacker Bobby Okereke leads defense in tackles
Last season, linebacker Bobby Okereke led the New York Giants in tackles with 143. His ability to seek the football and make plays around the ball carrier is what has made him wildly productive as a tackler since entering the NFL.
Now with the Panthers and paired with second-team All-Pro linebacker Devin Lloyd, Okereke can roam free at the second level. He won't give you high-end play, but what he offers is better than anything Trevin Wallace and Claudin Cherelus would've provided.
On Sunday, not only does he lead Carolina's defense in tackles, but Okereke also becomes the tackle leader for both teams to start what could be another productive season.
Carolina Panthers' pass rush sacks Caleb Williams four times
As we all know, Caleb Williams is a true chaos quarterback with no regard for elite pocket etiquette. He will abandon clean pockets and put himself at risk of creating turnover-worthy plays, only for some of them to be among the most ridiculous throws you'll see.
Last season, the Panthers had arguably the worst pass rush in the NFL. This year, after adding Jaelan Phillips in free agency and another year of development from Princely Umanmielen, defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero will look to be more aggressive on the edge.
The Panthers not only apply consistent pressure on Williams, but they get to him four times, throwing him off his game and forcing him into tough decisions all game. This will go a long way toward securing a Week 1 victory for Carolina.
