David Tepper has been almost a recluse since general manager Dan Morgan and head coach Dave Canales took over football operations. But that doesn't mean the Carolina Panthers owner is not placing lofty expectations on the franchise.
There was an inevitable scrum when Tepper declared himself available to the media after Wednesday's practice. Several topics were discussed, and the billionaire hedge fund manager made no secret of his ambitions over the next couple of seasons.
When asked what success looks like for the Panthers moving forward, Tepper was very specific.

He wants two consecutive winning seasons this year and next for the first time in Carolina's franchise history. That would be the clearest sign yet that this project is on the correct path with Morgan and Canales leading the charge.
And if this objective isn't met, who knows what could happen?
“I’d like to see us string two winning seasons together for the first time in this franchise’s history, so that’s this year and next year. That’s success.”
Tepper has yet to experience a winning record since becoming owner, so it's not hard to see why he's craving this achievement. The Panthers made the playoffs by winning the NFC South in 2025, but they did so having secured only eight victories.
He wants that to change. Now.
While Tepper's meddling and inability to make the decisions needed to provide stability were a big reason behind Carolina's plunge to rock bottom early in his tenure, he's taken a different approach since. And the gradual progress speaks for itself.

He trusts those in charge, lending advice and support only when needed. Tepper is still kept informed of behind-the-scenes developments, but no flash incidents are embarrassing the organization in the public eye.
But at the end of the day, Tepper expects results. And if the Panthers cannot meet the targets he's clearly set, he's got no problem making the changes he wants.
The Panthers are closer than they've ever been to competing under Tepper. The owner saw how alive Bank of America Stadium was when the Los Angeles Rams came to town for a wild-card playoff game. That only whetted the appetite, and one of the NFL's richest owners is now expecting Carolina to take the next step.
Morgan and Canales share the vision. They have both echoed these sentiments over the offseason, believing the Panthers are finally in a position to make noise in the playoffs.
Getting there is the tricky part.
The NFC South will be competitive once again. One could make a case for any of the four teams securing the division crown, which is pretty rare. But make no mistake; Tepper is anticipating the Panthers making a bold bid to defend their championship for another home playoff encounter.
Everything is in position. Tepper knows it, and he is desperate for his franchise to make all the right noises.
That raises pressure, of course. But it's probably nothing Morgan and Canales haven't heard behind the scenes.
Now, it's time to deliver.
