Jalen Coker, WR
The Panthers did the right thing by extending Jalen Coker before the season. Because if the wide receiver keeps up his exceptional start, it would have cost them a whole lot more to keep him around.
Coker has been nothing short of sensational to start the campaign. He is brimming with confidence, is making tough catches look routine, and his connection with quarterback Bryce Young continues to blossom. The Panthers have a legitimate 1-2 punch at receiver, and the new aggressive scheme is helping bring more from the gifted pass-catcher.
Carolina always believed in Coker. Now, he's ready to take the next step into legitimate superstardom at the best possible time.
Bobby Okereke, LB
When the competition between Trevin Wallace and Claudin Cherelus didn't go as the Panthers expected, general manager Dan Morgan acted decisively. Carolina signed Bobby Okereke, and the impression made by the veteran through two games was better than even the brightest optimist envisaged.
Okereke is flying around the field with controlled poise. His partnership with Devin Lloyd is the best linebacker pairing Carolina's had in years, and he's forced a couple of crucial turnovers to further heighten his impact.
This is a pleasant surprise, especially given how late Okereke joined the Panthers this summer. Hopefully, this is just the start of great things.
Lee Hunter, DL
Rookie defensive lineman Lee Hunter is being asked to take on huge responsibilities right out of the gate. The second-round selection is the starting nose tackle, and even with ups and downs, he's coping well.
Hunter was inconsistent against the Chicago Bears. He turned things up in Atlanta, providing the forceful run-stopping and explosiveness off the snap that defined his college tape at Texas Tech.
The first-year pro will only get better with more experience. And with Bobby Brown III missing last weekend due to injury, Hunter is already an integral piece of the puzzle.
Darren Waller, TE
The Panthers raised a few eyebrows with the late-summer signing of veteran tight end Darren Waller. However, after an initial bedding-in period, the Pro Bowler is already a significant part of the team's offensive plans.
Darrell Bevell worked with Waller in Miami last season. He knows how to use him, and this input has been invaluable for offensive coordinator Brad Idzik. While he might not be the 1,000-receiving-yard player of old, the Panthers are finding ways to maximize his athletic gifts.
Whether it's as a decoy, a red-zone threat, or a valuable outlet over the middle, Waller is off to the best possible start in Carolina. If he stays healthy, fans expect this trend to continue.
