When defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero took the podium for his weekly media availability, he needed to find the right answers. Carolina Panthers fans demanded them after an abysmal defensive display that let up 59 points against the Chicago Bears in Week 1.
And not for the first time in Carolina, the defensive play-caller remained steadfast in his belief.
Things couldn't have gone worse for Evero to begin the 2026 campaign. The Panthers' defense got run all over. Communication broke down against pre-snap motions, and the defense gave up no edge containment when quarterback Caleb Williams scrambled.

It was a recipe for disaster. And there was nobody happier than Bears head coach Ben Johnson.
Evero immediately went to the hot seat, at least for a large section of the fan base. Head coach Dave Canales remains confident in his capabilities, reaffirming his commitment to the defensive coordinator and his 3-4 base scheme.
But talk is cheap.
In fairness to Evero, he knows it.
This is the moment when Carolina is supposed to take the next step into legitimate contention this season. Evero's defense made strides in 2025, but the bar wasn't exactly high after a historically bad 2024 campaign when they gave up the most single-season points in NFL history.
Instead of moving on from Evero, the Panthers gave him a contract extension. But the same frustrating flaws keep cropping up in the biggest moments.
The players need to share the blame. Their execution was appalling, and the effort just wasn't where it needed to be. But when assessing the situation, Evero said it was a collective failure rather than calling anybody out specifically.

That's how you keep the locker room onside.
"There's not a lack of confidence. We didn't play the way that we wanted. There are a lot of areas we can coach better as well, but we feel like there are a lot of things we can certainly improve on and a lot of things we can correct, and that's the goal."
The resolve is admirable. And the players will no doubt appreciate it.
But fans are demanding action and considerable improvements, starting this weekend at the Atlanta Falcons.
That puts Evero's run defense squarely in the crosshairs of Falcons running back Bijan Robinson.
Atlanta may have issues at quarterback, but Robinson is arguably the NFL's most complete backfield threat. He'd have seen the Bears gash Carolina for 291 rushing yards and six scores on the ground. The former Texas phenom will aim to boost his stats with an electrifying Week 2 performance to give his squad a fighting chance.
The Panthers must be ready to meet fire with fire. If the same complications surface, Robinson will have a dominant showing.
Getting a wake-up call so early in the year is better than when things get a little more serious. Even so, there has been more than good throughout Evero's tenure in Carolina, and with the personnel enhancements made this offseason, the same inconsistencies will no longer be tolerated.
The heat is on. And it won't take long to figure out what Evero is truly made of.
