The Carolina Panthers reportedly won't have Jalen Coker available in Week 4 against the Detroit Lions on Sunday Night Football. Though disappointing, the long game mattered more.

With Xavier Legette now on injured reserve with a knee problem and the team already dealing with significant secondary injuries, getting Coker back on the field soon would give quarterback Bryce Young another much-needed weapon.

But that probably won't be this weekend.

Carolina Panthers are playing the long game with Jalen Coker's quad injury

Carolina needs to be careful. Coker is dealing with a quadriceps injury, and although he has returned to limited practice, the Panthers have to be sure he's ready before putting him back into game action.

After all, there's little reason to take an unnecessary risk with a player the organization has already invested in financially and expects to contribute for years to come.

The Panthers' injury situation makes Coker's probable absence against the Lions even more complicated.

Carolina has already placed starting cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson Sr. on injured reserve, and Legette will miss several more weeks as well.

That creates a legitimate need for Coker.

With him available, Young would have another established target alongside rookie Tetairoa McMillan, who has taken on a major role in the passing game. Coker's ability to get open and make plays after the catch will be missed, but it's not the end of the world.

Carolina Panthers had to look beyond Sunday Night Football with Jalen Coker

After all, the Panthers have to look beyond Sunday night.

Carolina has a bye in Week 5, meaning Coker would have an additional week to recover before the team's next game against the Philadelphia Eagles on October 18.

If the medical staff decided that Coker would benefit from sitting out against Detroit, the timing gives the Panthers a chance to let him recover without missing multiple games afterward.

The NFC South is also still within reach.

Carolina is 1-2 after three games, and plenty of football remains to make up ground in the division. One game could affect the standings, but risking a longer absence for a young receiver could hurt the Panthers far more over the course of the season.

The Panthers gave Coker a chance to feature against Detroit. Fans may not like it, but keeping the bigger picture in mind was always the preferred course of action. And Carolina didn't let the pressure of a prime-time game dictate its decision.

Coker has a long career ahead of him, and the Panthers have committed to keeping him in Charlotte.

Giving him the time he needs to recover could pay off well beyond Week 4, particularly as Carolina enters a stretch of the season where it will need its top playmakers healthy.
