The Carolina Panthers are optimistic that their NFC South championship triumph last season can become the start of a more prosperous future. That is not an opinion shared by everybody, with one NFL analyst suggesting head coach Dave Canales' squad could fall flat this time around.
General manager Dan Morgan's moves this offseason were the clearest indicator yet that he believes the Panthers are closer than ever to being competitive. They have strength in depth, and aside from a few concerning injuries, things are looking up.
At the same time, taking the next step will be the most difficult of all.

Lou Scataglia of NFL Spin Zone didn't think there was much to be excited about for the Panthers this season. He doesn't believe they are particularly dominant in any one area, and the lingering concerns around quarterback Bryce Young are enough for the expert to sell his stock in the franchise.
"On paper, the Panthers don't overwhelm you much anywhere, and I am not sure the physically limited (Bryce) Young has a higher ceiling than what we saw last year, and I'd not be shocked if he quickly emerged as the third-best QB in this division. I would sell your Panthers stock for the 2026 season."
It's a frustrating take from a Panthers fan's perspective. But it's not like Scataglia is alone in his thoughts, either.
Other respected media analysts are not expecting the Panthers to grow.
The New Orleans Saints are the trendy pick, while the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' quality has many tipping them to regain their division crown. As for the Atlanta Falcons? There are too many concerns around the quarterback position to inspire confidence.
The Panthers will focus on what they can control. It's uncharted territory for most in this squad, being the hunter and not the hunted. That brings a different kind of pressure and spotlight, so it's something they have to be ready for.

Everyone will be gunning for the Panthers. And their first-place schedule could create enough complications to stagnate results-wise if everyone is not at peak performance throughout the season.
However, the Panthers are not without a chance.
They have a young roster, all growing together. They have Pro Bowl-caliber performers almost everywhere on the depth chart. There are some weaknesses that could hold them back, but there is more than enough to make sure they are in almost every game.
Inevitably, the Panthers will rise or fall with Young. But it's also worth remembering that offensive coordinator Brad Idzik is now calling plays. This is expected to bring improved creativity and more explosive plays, unlocking something a little different.
It'll be fascinating to see things unfold. The NFC South is competitive without having the caliber of teams that other divisions do. That also makes it unpredictable, and the Panthers should not be written off by any stretch of the imagination.
