Just when it looked like wide receiver Xavier Legette was finally building momentum after an impressive performance against the Atlanta Falcons, another setback has emerged.
Now, the Carolina Panthers have placed the 2024 first-round pick on injured reserve with a knee problem.
This is another brutal blow in Legette's quest to stay relevant in Carolina.
Xavier Legette faces a race against time to save his Carolina Panthers career
There is no denying that Legette has failed to meet expectations so far. The Panthers have never lost faith in the receiver, but he is firmly behind Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker in the pecking order. If third-round rookie Chris Brazzell II hadn't suffered a season-ending MCL injury, things would look even worse.
Legette's heard all the criticism. He's been working hard to improve his craft, earning praise from head coach Dave Canales for his effort and willingness to improve. And against the Falcons, it looked like the light had finally come on.
But stretching out for a deep 55-yard reception that let Carolina seize the initiative came at a price.
The South Carolina product missed last week, and he will now be out for multiple weeks. Carolina clearly wasn't satisfied with how the knee was healing and decided on more drastic measures. Legette probably didn't like it, but it's the unfortunate situation he's in now.
Just where that leaves Legette's long-term future in Carolina is anyone's guess.
Xavier Legette cannot put a foot wrong when he returns from injury
Legette needed a strong campaign to alleviate his ever-growing doubters. His flashes against the Falcons won't be enough, so when he gets the all-clear to resume football activities, he has to finish the campaign strong.
Nothing else will suffice.
It's been one thing after another with Legette. Injuries and inconsistent performances have stopped the player from reaching his true potential. The Panthers won't give up on the No. 32 overall selection in the 2024 NFL Draft just yet, but there will be a tipping point at some stage.
If Legette cannot stay healthy or be trusted to deliver when it counts, then this will only end one way.
He knows it, but this latest stumbling block will only make him more determined to succeed.
Legette's situation remains precarious. There doesn't seem much point in general manager Dan Morgan trading the player before the deadline, and they'd be lucky to get anything given his injury history. But if the Panthers upgrade the receiver position again next offseason and Brazzell returns from injury, he might become expendable.
That's for the future. For now, the Panthers will give Legette all the support he needs, hoping he can return sooner rather than later. That won't be for at least a month, so there is real urgency to leave no doubt with strong efforts over the second half of 2026.
If not, then Legette will be anxiously looking over his shoulder when the 2027 offseason arrives.
Because the Panthers' patience won't last forever.
