The Carolina Panthers raised eyebrows by waiving wide receiver Jimmy Horn Jr. after one too many mistakes. And this should serve as a clear warning to Xavier Legette moving forward.
Either get your act together, or you will not be a part of this franchise's long-term future.
Legette was practically an innocent bystander in Week 1 against the Chicago Bears. He dropped a screen pass early and couldn't catch his only other target. Horn's muffed punt gave him more work on special teams in the return game, but that's about it.

Of course, Legette will get a longer leash than Horn. He was a first-round pick while the former Colorado playmaker was taken in the sixth. There will be more patience attached, and rightfully so. But we're now in Year 3 for the South Carolina product, and the same mistakes keep surfacing.
And everyone has their limits.
The Panthers' decision to remove Horn so early from the equation sent a message. They have higher expectations to meet, and the bar has been raised. Everyone must respond accordingly. Anyone who doesn't will be shown the door at some stage.
Legette's tipping point hasn't arrived yet. But if he cannot be more productive, it'll come quicker than he thinks.
Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker are already way ahead of Legette. They are quickly becoming one of the league's most dynamic young wideout tandems, with a flair for the big occasion. The No. 32 pick in 2024 is seemingly WR3 by default, given rookie third-rounder Chris Brazzell II is spending his first year on injured reserve after tearing his LCL during camp.
Carolina has no room for passengers if it wants to take the next step. The Panthers know it. And after Horn was unceremoniously removed from the equation, Legette should, too.

There remains belief in Legette. He's got the physical tools to be impactful. The self-confidence element doesn't seem to be high right now, but the Mullins native is not completely past the point of no return either.
The clock is ticking. It might not come this season, but general manager Dan Morgan won't hesitate to make a tough choice with Legette at some stage if he cannot turn things around.
He did with Horn. He did it with Jonathan Mingo, too.
He can do it with Legette.
This is all part of the business. The Panthers could bring Horn back to their practice squad, but David Moore and Ja'seem Reed can pick up the slack if someone gets hurt.
And if this doesn't light a fire under Legette, nothing will.
The Panthers will only give Legette so many chances. He hasn't seized many so far. But his athletic ceiling and high draft status have been his saving grace.
That won't be the case forever.
Legette has worked hard throughout the offseason, but what comes next matters even more. Fans are getting tired, and if the wideout's consistency doesn't rise when his number is called, Morgan and head coach Dave Canales will, too.
Horn's abrupt exit is another timely reminder of that fact.
