Undrafted rookie defensive lineman Aaron Hall continued to make his strengthening roster case during the Carolina Panthers' preseason game against the Buffalo Bills, showing why he may deserve a place on the 53-man squad.
Hall's performance drew attention from multiple observers during the game. Mike Kaye of ESPN summed it up simply on social media: “Aaron Hall is a player.”
That kind of respect is becoming familiar for Hall as he has been turning heads for months. And with the lack of legitimate depth in the trenches after Tershawn Wharton's injury and LaBryan Ray's retirement, there is a real opening for the Duke product to go through.
Aaron Hall must finish strong to cement his Carolina Panthers roster spot
The Panthers' defensive line was expected to feature Derrick Brown, Bobby Brown III, second-round rookie Lee Hunter, Cam Jackson, Wharton, and several other players competing for roles. These plans have changed quickly, and Hall might be the biggest beneficiary if he keeps standing out when it counts.
Hall has a path. He has taken advantage of it up to this point. Catching the eye versus the Bills at Highmark Stadium was the strongest measuring stick yet.
That's why Hall's emergence is worth watching closely over the remainder of August.
The Panthers don't need him to become Derrick Brown overnight. They need him to prove that he can provide useful snaps, create some interior disruption and give defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero another player capable of rotating into the team's 3-4 base front when required.
Hall's own comments earlier this offseason showed that he understands the potential value of that role. And with a strong finish to the summer, he should achieve this goal.
“I know some people don't understand that part of the game is taking that pressure off of Derrick Brown, so that he's fresh in the fourth quarter, clutch time,” Hall said. “And so I think just being able to do everything down the line, it's the greatest opportunity that I'm able to see coming in.”
That mindset could serve him well as he begins a rags-to-riches story fans are already believing in.
The Panthers have invested heavily in rebuilding their defense. Having inexpensive young players emerge behind the established veterans is exactly how a roster becomes deeper without constantly spending in free agency.
Hall still has plenty to prove. One preseason performance doesn't guarantee a roster spot, and there's still a lot in his game that he needs to clean up.
But the flashes are there, and they aren’t hard to see.
