It's been a busy offseason for the Carolina Panthers. But before the free-agent splashes and hype around potential incoming prospects via the 2026 NFL Draft, head coach Dave Canales made a quiet move that could mean much more.
After a period of self-reflection after the campaign, Canales relinquished play-calling duties to Brad Idzik. This was the natural transition, but the Panthers still wanted to give the offensive coordinator some extra support to make it run more smoothly.
Enter, Darrell Bevell. He's got a wealth of experience in running successful offenses around the league. He's also got a prior connection to Canales from their time working together on the Seattle Seahawks, which should serve him well as he embarks on this exciting opportunity.
Darrell Bevell's input could help Carolina Panthers' offense reach new heights in 2026
During a conversation with Joe Person of The Athletic at the annual league meeting, Canales was highly confident in the new associate head coach/offensive specialist's potential impact. He also made his feelings clear about what he wants the offense to look like under Idzik, and Bevell will be there to aid him every step of the way.
"I want my offenses from a balanced run-pass to fit the best of what Darrell [Bevell] brought to us in Seattle and also the best of what he’s learned in the meantime being in a couple different spots in Detroit, Jacksonville and Miami the last couple of years.
"To be able to bring all the experiences that he’s had, that I’ve had while we’ve been apart for all these years, to compare those notes and to give us a great chance to have success."
Having this alignment will be crucial to Carolina's offensive growth. Canales' play-calling was accused of being conservative and predictable, especially in key moments. He wants to take a back seat and become the CEO of the entire football operation. Idzik will have more innovative ideas, and Bevell's presence will ensure the right balance, in line with the head coach's demands.
Having someone with Bevell's knowledge will only assist Idzik. It blends the new with the experienced. Not everything will look different, but it would be surprising if a few extra nuances weren't added to give the system a more explosive, creative feel.
It's a big year for the Panthers. It's an even bigger year for quarterback Bryce Young. However, if Bevell's arrival has the desired effect, and Idzik takes to his play-calling duties effectively, Carolina's offense could be the spark that ignites them to even greater fortunes when the 2026 campaign begins.
And in this scenario, Bevell's understated arrival to Carolina's coaching staff will be the Panthers' most important move that almost everyone forgot to acknowledge.
