The Carolina Panthers spent big money on Devin Lloyd this offseason. Through five games, the linebacker is looking like he was worth every bit of it.

Lloyd continued his impressive start in Carolina's win over the Philadelphia Eagles, recording four tackles and a sack. But one particular statistic from his performance shows just how dominant he's been.

According to ESPN Analytics and Next Gen Stats, Lloyd recorded an 82 percent pass rush win rate against Philadelphia, the highest single-game mark by any player since ESPN began tracking the statistic in 2017.

Devin Lloyd's impact with Carolina Panthers is going from strength to strength

It's an impressive number for any defender, but especially for an inside linebacker whose responsibilities extend well beyond rushing the quarterback.

Pass rush win rate measures how often a defender beats his blocker on qualifying pass rush opportunities. Lloyd's 82% mark doesn't mean he pressured the quarterback on 82% of Philadelphia's passing plays, but it does show how effective he was when Carolina sent him after the quarterback.

And this is hardly the first time Lloyd has taken over a game this season.

Against the Atlanta Falcons earlier this year, Lloyd recorded nine tackles, two interceptions, three passes defended, and a sack in Carolina's victory. He also returned one of those picks for a 53-yard touchdown.

It was arguably one of the best performances by a Panthers linebacker since Luke Kuechly retired, and head coach Dave Canales certainly seemed to agree.

Devin Lloyd is the linchpin Carolina Panthers' defense needs

The Panthers defense has come a long way from the unit that allowed a franchise record 534 points in 2024. And Lloyd has been a big part of taking this unit to the next level.

It's just so encouraging to see the Panthers getting these kinds of performances from a player they specifically targeted to help turn the defense around.

Carolina still has areas to clean up, especially after committing 13 penalties for 149 yards against Philadelphia. The defense also needs to prove it can maintain this level of play against healthier offenses.

Still, Lloyd has been one of the biggest reasons for the defensive improvement.

The Panthers have spent years trying to find a linebacker who can make the kind of impact Kuechly once did. Lloyd has a long way to go before earning that comparison over an entire season, but his early performances are giving fans plenty of reasons to be excited.

And if he continues playing anywhere near this level, that $42 million contract could end up looking like a bargain.
