Trevor Etienne is on injured reserve and will miss at least the first four games of the season. That has pushed Jimmy Horn Jr. into the starting returner role heading into Week 1, with the Carolina Panthers listing him first at both kick and punt returner.
Now Horn finally has a chance to show the Panthers exactly what he can do when the job is his. And he can't afford to waste it.
Horn wasn't originally supposed to be the Panthers' top returner.

When training camp opened, Etienne was ahead of him on the depth chart, with Horn serving as the backup. That was still a path to playing time, but it wasn't nearly as valuable as what the 2025 sixth-round pick out of Colorado has now.
The difference is that Horn has already shown enough for Carolina to trust him.
He got plenty of work during the preseason, handling all of the Panthers' punt returns in their preseason finale. Carolina also spent time figuring out which players could contribute in the return game after Etienne went down.
Horn clearly did enough. Now he gets to prove it counts.
The biggest thing for Horn is that this opportunity doesn't have to end when Etienne comes back. That's the goal he should be aiming for, and the coaching staff will be watching his every move closely.
If Horn plays well over the first month of the season, the Panthers will have to figure out how to keep him involved once Etienne is healthy. That could mean continuing to use him as a returner, giving him more offensive snaps, or finding other ways to get the ball in his hands.

Horn has already shown flashes of what he can do as a receiver, too. Carolina has kept him in the competition for playing time despite a crowded receiver room.
That's what makes the returner job so important. Horn now has a clear way to put his ability on display every Sunday, starting this weekend against the Chicago Bears.
He doesn't have to wait for an injury at receiver. He doesn't have to hope a coach gives him a bigger role. He has a job. What he does with it could determine how the Panthers view Horn for the rest of the season.
Etienne's injury is obviously unfortunate for the Panthers and the second-year running back. But for Horn, this is the opening he needed.
The Panthers just gave him a chance to take control of the return game. Now he has to make it impossible for them to take it away.
