The Carolina Panthers are asking a lot of rookie cornerback Will Lee III. He's answering the call, and his Week 6 performance against the Philadelphia Eagles was the best of his young career by a considerable margin.
Lee is only five games into his professional journey. However, he already looks like an exceptional draft find from general manager Dan Morgan.
The Panthers don't have Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson Sr. available right now, arguably the league's best cornerback tandem. They are long-term absentees, so Lee has been forced to grow up quickly as the team's CB1 by default.
Will Lee III was outstanding in Carolina Panthers' impressive Week 6 win
He's taking that responsibility seriously.
And he is thriving.
Lee has visibly grown in confidence. His NFL debut against the Chicago Bears was an unmitigated disaster, but the Texas A&M product has been a revelation almost ever since. And given that he's facing the opposition's best receiver more often than not, it's even more impressive.
With the Panthers looking for a pivotal win at Lincoln Financial Field, Lee mostly faced prolific wideout, DeVonta Smith. Not exactly an easy proposition, but the defensive back handled it superbly.
There was a lot to like. Lee looked assured in coverage, came up with a couple of key pass breakups, and even managed some decent run stops for good measure. And even though he gave up a touchdown to Smith, he couldn't have done much more.
The coverage was good. The throw and catch were better.
That's just the way it goes sometimes. But overall, Lee was nothing short of outstanding.
Will Lee III already looks like a future Carolina Panthers cornerstone
At a time when the Panthers needed someone in their cornerback room to step up without Jackson and Horn, Lee is coming through when it matters most. He will gain a lot from this experience as a focal point of Ejiro Evero's defense, and though there will be struggles, he is improving with every game.
This was his most accomplished performance so far. The man who earned the nickname The Blanket in college is showing the same traits in the pros. Lee is only going to get better the further along he goes, and getting him at No. 129 overall in the 2026 NFL Draft already looks like an outstanding piece of business.
Lee also has self-belief.
He was constantly jawing with Smith, going back and forth throughout a battle he ultimately won. The Panthers ran out comfortable victors, but it might have been a little tenser if the first-year pro hadn't put in a performance of the highest caliber.
The sky is the limit for Lee.
He's got the size, length, and athleticism to be a long-term cornerstone piece in Carolina. And with Jackson out of contract next spring, the Panthers may think twice about paying him if their rookie sensation keeps this up.
That's for the future. For now, Lee is silencing his pre-draft doubters in the best possible way.
And this stunning showcase of his potential could be the start of great things to come.
