Training Camp – Thursday Wrap Up

AUTHOR: John White | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, Panthers | COMMENTS: None Yet

The Carolina Panthers held only one practice session on Thursday.  There was bad news, however as Ryne Robinson was carted off the field.
Panthers kick returner and backup receiver Ryne Robinson injured his left knee in practice Thursday and was carted off field.  He went up high to make a catch while being double covered by safety Nate Salley and cornerback Richard Marshall. After he landed, he was holding his left knee. He was helped off the field and trainer Ryan Vermillion tested Robinson’s knee for stability. Robinson got up and walked gingerly, then was carried to a tent where he [...]

The Department of Corrections Issues Statement

AUTHOR: John White | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, Panthers | COMMENTS: 8 Comments

The blogger for the Dallas Cowboys, the team I will forever call the Department of Corrections, has fired back at the Carolina Panthers. This just gets better all the time.
To argue that Steve Smith has a chance to become one, if not the one, best receiver the NFL has ever seen is just plain ridiculous. What is more ridiculous is this prophecy didn’t come from the blogger himself, it came from Smith’s arrogant mind. So, I offered a shot of reality in the post here. Don’t get me wrong, Smith is a good receiver, but he is not the greatest ever [...]

Wednesday Afternoon Recap

AUTHOR: John White | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, Panthers | COMMENTS: None Yet

There may have been a tussle among the Carolina Panthers in the early session Wednesday but it seems that everybody kissed shook hands and made up in time for the afternoon session.
Looks like the Panthers have been spared the worse regarding the left knee injury suffered by defensive tackle Ian Scott.
According to a source close to the situation, Scott suffered a sprain to his medial collateral ligament and will miss a couple of weeks, but should be ready to return to practice by mid-August.

Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting!

AUTHOR: John White | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, Panthers | COMMENTS: None Yet

It had to happen sooner or later.  There had to be a fight.  It’s been hot and miserable on those practice fields in Spartaburg.  At some point, tempers would flair during one of the Carolina Panthers training camp sessions.
It’s hot, and players, as they always do after a few days of camp, are getting a bit ornery. There was a mild scuffle between rookie RT Jeff Otah and veteran DE Tyler Brayton. It didn’t last long, which was probably good for Brayton.
I wasn’t there to see this so I can’t report to you whether Brayton kicked Otah in his junk [...]

Cowboys Fan Continues Tradition of Contradiction

AUTHOR: John White | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, Panthers | COMMENTS: 4 Comments

Modus operandi for a Dallas Cowboys’ blogger:

Surf the net looking for anything you might remotely disagree with.
Leave a comment that voices your displeasure with the article or post.
Despite contradiction(s), stand by your opinion and defend it with the voracity of a wolverine.
Invite 30 of your fellow Cowboys fans to attack the party that had the audacity to make a comment short of glowing about your team or one of your players.  Even worse, your fellow Cowboys fans should attack at dawn if the offender has stated that one of their own is a great player or the best at their [...]

Steve Smith: Greatest Receiver Ever!

AUTHOR: John White | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, Panthers | COMMENTS: 20 Comments

It’s a story so big that it ran in two newspapers on the very same day – the Charlotte Observer and the Gaton Gazette.
Steve Smith wants to be the best wide receiver in history or at least the statistical leader.
His goal: Be unstoppable no matter what plays he runs.
Another goal: Finish his career as one of the leading pass-catchers in NFL history.
Smith, the Panthers’ star receiver, revealed Monday that he has a laminated piece of paper listing the league’s all-time leaders in receiving yards.
Atop that category is former 49ers great Jerry Rice (22,458), followed by ex-Raider Tim Brown (14,934).

Those 2.5 Sacks Should Be a Memory

AUTHOR: John White | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, Panthers | COMMENTS: 1 Comment

Jordan Gross, the Carolina Panthers starting right tackle, made a bold statement on Monday.  Boy, did he!
Left tackle Jordan Gross, who faces Peppers every day in practice, said (Julius) Peppers is “bigger, stronger and faster” than he’s ever seen him and fully expects him to rebound from a disappointing season in 2007.
“I’ll say this with 100 percent confidence, I think he’s going to have his best year ever,” said Gross, who has been teammates with Peppers since 2003. “He’s better than I’ve ever seen him. Barring anything unknown, there’s no reason he won’t go out and set records, I think. [...]

Day One: That’s A Wrap!

AUTHOR: John White | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, Panthers | COMMENTS: None Yet

The initial thrill of seeing the players actually take the field is fading now.  Day one of the Carolina Panthers 2008 training camp is over.  In the books.  Complete.
There are a number of highlights and notes that came from this first day of two-a-days.
Steve Reed of the Gaston Gazette has some really good stuff.
Jake Delhomme continues to progress nicely in his return from elbow surgery.
In fact, Delhomme said he doesn’t even notice it anymore.
“The last few years after the first practice I iced right away,” Delhomme said after Saturday morning’s practice. “Now that you brought it up, that’s the first [...]

Paging Nurse Ratched!

AUTHOR: John White | IN: Fanzone/Tailgating, Injuries, Panthers | COMMENTS: None Yet

Seems that quite a few guys were nursing injuries and ailments during the Carolina Panthers’ Saturday evening training camp session.  Here’s David Scott’s entry from the Charlotte Observer.
The Panthers had been hesitant on revealing how much quarterback Jake Delhomme would throw during training camp. Looks like he’ll be eased in somewhat. Delhomme saw plenty of action during Saturday’s morning practice and his passes had plenty of zip. But Delhomme spent much of the evening practice with his helmet off, watching backups Matt Moore, Brett Basanez and Lester Ricard take the snaps.
