The Carolina Panthers are giving left tackle Ikem Ekwonu all the time he needs to recover from a torn patellar tendon. There is no definitive timeline for his return, but general manager Dan Morgan lauded the 2021 first-round pick's work ethic and overall mindset during his rehabilitation.

Ekwonu is expected to miss a large portion of the 2026 campaign. However, a stunning injury development involving the Chicago Bears offers encouragement that he can return sooner than expected.

The Bears have officially activated offensive tackle Ozzy Trapilo following a lengthy spell on the sidelines. Like Ekwonu, he sustained a ruptured patellar tendon in the playoffs. Getting back so soon represents a remarkable turnaround, especially considering how long this serious complication can often take to heal.

Ozzy Trapilo boost gives Ikem Ekwonu fresh motivation for Carolina Panthers return

Naturally, this came with optimism around Ekwonu's outlook. But the reality might be different.

Not all injuries are the same. Players don't respond to treatment the same way. Ekwonu is making encouraging progress and hitting all his markers, but Trapilo's rapid progress doesn't impact the North Carolina State product one way or the other.

But it's a motivational tool if nothing else.

The Panthers will take their time. Ekwonu will want to get the all-clear to resume football activities quickly, given it's also a contract year. But Carolina has the luxury of caution with free-agent signing Rasheed Walker and first-round rookie Monroe Freeling manning the edges until further notice.

If anything, Trapilo should inspire Ekwonu.

It remains a step-by-step process. Even so, seeing a fellow lineman defy the odds after suffering the same injury almost at the same time should be enough to spur him on.

Ikem Ekwonu now knows his Carolina Panthers comeback is possible

Getting healthy after long-term injuries is just as much about mental strength as physical. Seeing Trapilo back on the field should provide the biggest boost imagniable as Ekwonu aims for a similar outcome.

Just when that'll be is anyone's guess. But the Panthers will not rush him back.

Ekwonu was on track for a massive payday this offseason before this cruel blow befell him. He lost millions, and the Panthers' decision to spend the No. 19 overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft on Freeling brought even more uncertainty to his door. What the future holds is unclear, but the sooner he gets back, the sooner he can remind people what an impactful player he is.

It's rare to see someone like Trapilo make such a swift return. But if Ekwonu ever feels down at any point during his grueling recovery, he now has a benchmark.

Nobody can say for sure when Ekwonu will get the green light. But he now has proof that his comeback is more than possible.

And at a time when positivity is in short supply, that could make a massive difference.
